What Our Little Shop by the Sea Has Taught Us

Running a small shop by the sea is never just about opening the doors each morning and putting beautiful things on the shelves.

It’s about the weather, the people, the seasons, the stories, and all the little moments in between. Living and working somewhere like the Lizard shapes the way you see things. It teaches you to slow down, pay attention, and appreciate the simple things.

Over the years, this little shop has taught us far more than we ever expected.

Life on the Edge of the Coast

Running a small shop on the Lizard teaches you very quickly that the coast has a mind of its own.

Some days the sea is calm, the sun is shining and people wander in with sandy shoes and ice creams in hand. Other days, the storms roll in, the wind rattles the windows and the rain comes in sideways. Life here feels a little wilder, and that definitely shapes the way we work.

The weather is stronger here. The sea salt gets into everything. Paint doesn’t stay fresh for long, signs need replacing, and maintenance is never really finished. The coast is beautiful, but it asks a lot of you too.

And then there’s the wildlife… including spiders so big they deserve their own postcode. Nature is quite literally on our doorstep.

Every morning we’re greeted by sea views, wild weather, changing skies and all the little reminders of why we love being here. It’s something we never take for granted.

We Genuinely Love Connecting With People

One of the best parts of running Mungo Lils is the people.

Because we’re a family-run business, we’re here. We’re present. We’re having the conversations, hearing the feedback and sharing in the little moments that make the shop what it is.

We genuinely care when someone tells us they loved a piece they bought last year, or when they come back to show us where it now lives in their home. We listen when people tell us what they’d love to see more of, and we love being able to shape the shop around that. It gives us a real chance to make the experience better, not just the products on the shelves.

We’ve met people from all over the world here. Holidaymakers, locals, people passing through and people who come back year after year. Some come in for a gift. Some come in for a chat. Some just want to know where the best hidden beach is, and honestly, we love that too.

Sharing our little corner of Cornwall with people is one of the best parts of the job.

The Seasons Shape Everything

Living and working by the coast means the seasons really matter.

Spring always feels full of excitement. The days get longer, the first flowers start to appear and there’s that feeling that everything is waking up again.

Summer is busy in the best way. The shop is full, the village feels alive and familiar holiday faces return. There’s always a lovely kind of chaos to it.

Autumn slows things down and brings a different kind of calm.

And winter is when we pause.

We close the shop for a little while so we can do the essential work on the building, catch up on maintenance, have some proper holiday time and rest before the next season begins.

As much as we love the busy months, that winter reset is so important. It gives us time to create, plan and get everything ready to do it all again.

People Care About the Story

One thing we’ve learnt is that people love knowing where something comes from.

Whether it’s a piece designed by us, made by a close friend, or created by a local artist we’ve worked with for years, people connect to that story. They want to know who made it. Why it was made. What inspired it.

There’s something special about taking home a piece that feels personal. Something that reminds you of your time here, or simply feels like it belongs in your home.

People value that connection. It makes a piece mean more.

It’s Never Really Just About the Shop

At the heart of it all, this little shop has taught us that it’s never really just about the shop.

It’s about the people who walk through the door. The conversations. The returning customers. The holidaymakers who visit every year. The local faces you know by name.

It’s about creating a place people want to come back to. And that means so much to us.

Because at the end of the day, the best part of running a small coastal shop isn’t what’s on the shelves. It’s the people who stop by to look and support your dream.
